2006 Young Soloist Competition (winner violinist Deborah Struntz)

Young Soloist Competition 2006

Winner violinist Deborah Struntz

Nearly 40 music students from London, Manchester and other music colleges competed in round one of the Eastbourne Symphony Orchestra’s annual Young Soloist Competition.  In front of a panel of four judges, chaired by ESO’s Musical Director Graham Jones, each competitor played for about 15 minutes a balanced programme of contrasting pieces.  The standard was exceptionally high which delighted the audience and gave the judges the difficult task of deciding who should go through to the final. The five finalists, along with the pieces which they will play in the final round (subject to change), are Claire Overbury (flute, Mozart Concerto in G 1st movt, Khatchaturian Concerto 1st movt), Sara Deborah Struntz (violin, Mozart Concerto in G 1st movt, Prokofiev Concerto No1 1st movt), Hannah Marcinowicz (saxophone, Elliott Carter Pastoral, Ibert Concertino Da Camera 2nd movt), Angelina Kopyrina (piano, Mozart Concerto No 23 1st movt, Tchaikovsky Concerto No1 3rd movt), Kira Doherty (horn, Mozart Concerto No 4 1st movt , Strauss Concerto No 1).  The Duke of Devonshire Prize for the best performance of those aged 17 and under was awarded jointly to Victoria Harrild (cello) and Ha-Young Jung (double bass).
The final takes place in Eastbourne College Theatre at 2.30pm (finishing about 6pm when the judges announce their decision) on Sunday 5 February in front of the Mayor and what promises to be a large audience, who will also have the opportunity to judge in a separate ballot. Tickets, on the door, are £5 (concessions for students and groups) and tea will be provided while the judges decide.  More information from www.eso.org, jt@eastbourne- college.co.uk or 01323 452314.
