ESO 31st Young Soloist Competition 2018

The Eastbourne Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce the results of the final of the 2018 competition.

This competition is now in its 31st year and has yet again been of a very high standard. The judges were given a very difficult task in choosing between many outstanding performances. This is a concerto competition and the judges were looking for competitors who performed programmes that demonstrated their soloistic virtuosity and musicality, as well as the ability to work well with their accompanist.

The 31st annual Eastbourne Symphony Orchestra Young Soloist Competition took place in January 2018.
1st ESO Young Soloist Award (£800): Sirius Chau (flute)
2nd Cox Memorial Memorial Prize (£500): Lucilla Rose Mariotti (violin)
3rd Colonel Howes Award (£350): Freya Spence (clarinet)
Runners-up (£150 each): Pui-Yee Lau (piano) and Elodie Chousmer-Howelles (violin)
The awards for the best performances by competitors under the age of 18 are
1st Duke of Devonshire Award (£300): Lucilla Rose Mariotti (violin)
2nd St Cecilia Bequest (£250): Amber Emson (violin)

We would like to express our thanks to all those who took part, many of whom travelled long distances.

There were a large number of very high standard performances over the course of the competition, and it was a pleasure to meet you all.

Our thanks also go to all the accompanists who performed to such a high standard, and so enhanced the quality of the competition.

We thank especially our resident accompanist Daniel King Smith who accompanied more than half of the performances in the first round and all but one of the performances in the final.
